10 Retro Bedroom Trends That Only 90s Kids Will Remember
The 90s were a golden era for bedroom decor, and many of us have fond memories of our childhood rooms. From colorful walls to quirky furniture, here are some iconic trends that defined the decade and are now making a comeback.
Lava Lamps: These psychedelic lighting fixtures were a must-have for any pre-teen or teen's room. With the 60s making a comeback in the 90s, lava lamps became a symbol of cool. Imagine them as a mindfulness tool today - a zen addition to any space.
Groovy Chick Bedding: The full ensemble, complete with fairy lights on the headboard, was the epitome of 90s chic. This trend continued into the early 2000s, and even in 2024, Primark brought back an entire Groovy Chick clothing line, proving its enduring appeal.
Inflatable Furniture: From blow-up chairs to DIY backpack inflators, these quirky pieces were a hit. While they may have been uncomfortable, they added a touch of fun to any room. I still daydream about having one of these in my current space!
Butterfly Chairs: These portable, repositionable chairs were a favorite for many. They could be easily moved around the room, often next to a TV or VHS combo. A modern-day example proves their timeless appeal.
Magazine Posters: DIY artwork was a common sight, with centerfold posters from magazines like Top of the Pops and Mizz carefully curated and blue-tacked to the walls. A1, NSYNC, and Blue were the bands of the moment, and their posters adorned many a bedroom.
CD/Tape Players: Every 90s kid had a stereo, but the Alba cassette and CD player was a cult classic. NOW That's What I Call Music! compilations were a staple, and these players are still cherished by many.
VHS Tapes: By the 90s, VHS tapes were commonplace, and an abundance of Disney videos, Jurassic Park, and Toy Story were a must-have. I'm considering getting a retro TV and VHS player combo for my son so he can experience this joy.
Glow-in-the-Dark Stars: My brother's Artex ceiling was transformed into a galaxy with these magical stars. TV Writer Abby Allen recalls her obsession with dolphin-shaped stars, proving their enduring charm.
Transparent Landline Phone: A landline was a staple, but a transparent one with rainbow-colored components was the ultimate status symbol. Why not? It added a touch of whimsy to any room.
Beaded Door Curtains: Entering and exiting the bedroom became a mini music video shoot with these beautiful, beaded curtains. Website Editor Kate Thomas admits to channeling Britney Spears with hers. Bohemian decor has brought them back, but with grown-up brown and cream hues.
