Ancient stepwells are being revitalized as India grapples with a severe water crisis. Only a handful have been restored for their original purpose, and Bansilalpet is a notable success story. Architect Kalpana Ramesh has revitalized 25 stepwells in Telangana, ensuring a sustainable water supply. She advocates for rainwater harvesting, a method she's practiced for 15 years, reducing her reliance on water tankers. However, the challenge lies in making all stepwells potable. India faces a dire water crisis, with over 600 million people already experiencing water stress. Groundwater exploitation is a critical issue, with states like Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan heading towards 'day zero' water availability. The Telangana government is implementing various strategies, including rainwater harvesting projects and greywater recycling, to combat water scarcity. The revival of stepwells is a crucial part of this initiative, offering a sustainable solution to India's water crisis.
