Aquarena Reopens: Swimmers Return to St. John's Pool After 2-Year Renovation (2026)

Swimmers are eagerly returning to the Aquarena as it prepares for its public reopening.

After a remarkable transformation that spanned over two years and cost $25 million, the Aquarena is set to welcome back patrons starting next week.

Alex Kennedy from CBC News reported on February 4, 2026, that swim teams have already had the chance to dive into the refreshed facility this past Wednesday, marking a significant milestone.

For many local swimmers in St. John’s, the closure of the Aquarena since 2023 has left a noticeable void, forcing them to seek alternative swimming spots. Nathan Wilson, a member of the St. John's Legends swim club, expressed his excitement about returning: "It feels fantastic to be back in this vast space. We’ve been anticipating this moment for such a long time, and it truly means a lot for everyone involved."

The renovations were undertaken in preparation for the 2025 Canada Games, an event the facility originally hosted back in 1977 when it was first constructed. Although the pool was reopened temporarily for the Games, further updates were needed before it could fully operate again.

On the day of the initial plunge, swim clubs celebrated taking the first swims in the newly upgraded pool, with the general reopening for the public just around the corner. However, not every amenity within the Aquarena is operational just yet. According to Craig Neil, the general manager of The Works, while swim clubs are enjoying the water, activities such as lane swims and lessons for the general public are set to resume next week. "It's exhilarating and exactly what we envisioned. Seeing all the athletes in the pool this morning was a wonderful sight," Neil remarked.

Among the extensive renovations is the addition of a one-meter diving tower, a modern timing system, and family-friendly changing rooms designed to provide full accessibility. Neil also mentioned that the Aquarena will feature a new waterslide, which, although smaller than the previous one, promises to add to the fun.

Some amenities, like saunas and hot tubs, are still undergoing final touches and won’t be available for a few more months. Additionally, the Tim Horton’s café located within The Works is also expected to reopen in due time.

Neil emphasized the long-standing importance of the Aquarena and fitness center in the community, stating, "This facility has been a staple for many years, and I believe people have a strong attachment to it. I’m confident that we will see a great turnout as people return."
