Schaefer Dreams of Olympic Glory
The young star of the New York Islanders, Matthew Schaefer, is eyeing the ultimate prize in international hockey. Despite being left off Canada's roster for the Milano Cortina Games, Schaefer remains optimistic about his future prospects.
"Everyone dreams of playing in the NHL," he says, "but to represent your country at the Olympics is an honor and a dream come true. It's a thrilling experience to watch and support your nation, cheering them on. But who wouldn't want to be part of that?"
Schaefer, the top pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, is already making waves. He leads all rookie defensemen in goals, points, power-play points, shots on goal, and average ice time. His impressive performance has earned him the attention of NHL.com, who named him their favorite in the Trophy Tracker series for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.
"He has a quick release, similar to Ray Bourque's wrist shot," notes Islanders coach Patrick Roy. "Ray kept it just above the pad, and Schaefer does the same."
Schaefer's talent is further evidenced by his career points, where he ties Bobby Orr for the third-most by an 18-year-old defenseman. He's on track to surpass Phil Housley and Rasmus Dahlin in this category.
Despite his individual success, Schaefer remains focused on team success. He's eager to watch his teammate, Bo Horvat, play for Canada and is determined to continue improving. Schaefer's dedication to the team is a testament to his character, as he embraces the support of his teammates, including goalies Ilya Sorokin and David Rittich.
"I won't get tired of talking about Schaefer," Roy says. "He's a team player, and when he makes a mistake, the goalies are there to help him."
As Schaefer continues to shine, he's setting his sights on the Olympics, dreaming of the day he'll represent Canada on the grandest stage of all.
